(In Line with Recommendation 78 of the Tripartite Report)
23 June 2025 | Port Loko, North-West Sierra Leone
The city of Port Loko played host to the first regional consultation on Sierra Leone’s electoral system reform, marking the beginning of public engagements under Recommendation 78 of the Tripartite Report.
Opening the session, Resident Minister for the North-West Region, Ambassador Wurie, and the Mayor of Port Loko City Council, Alie Badara Tarawallie, described Port Loko as “the most friendly and politically tolerant city in Sierra Leone.” Their remarks were made in anticipation of a constructive and peaceful dialogue.

Participants from Karene, Kambia, and Port Loko districts attended the session, offering a range of perspectives on the two electoral systems under consideration: Proportional Representation (PR) and First-Past-the-Post (FPTP).
Their views reflected a deep connection to their communities’ political histories and practices. Discussions were described as diverse, insightful, and refreshing, with participants drawing on personal and communal experiences to inform their contributions.
The session officially launched a series of regional consultations aimed at shaping the national consensus on the preferred voting system for Sierra Leone’s future elections.
The next consultation is scheduled to take place in Makeni on Wednesday, 25 June 2025, covering the North-East Region.
These nationwide meetings are being organised by the Tripartite Steering Committee Secretariat in collaboration with the Office of the Attorney-General, with support from the Government of Sierra Leone and the European Union, coordinated through International IDEA Africa.
