Freetown – Government of Sierra Leone through the Office of the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice released 37 inmates in fulfilment of Resolution ‘4’ of the National Unity Agreement signed between the Government and main opposition All Peoples Congress Party.
The prisoners were arrested during the political impasse following the 2023 elections.
Government continues to honour its commitment to implementing the Unity Agreement and the Tripartite Recommendations.
Days ago, the government paid salaries of opposition members of parliament and councilors who did not occupy their offices due to the political friction after the elections.
Less than a month ago, a national dialogue was held to help determine Sierra Leone’s preferred electoral system, in line with Recommendation 78 of the Tripartite Report, which called for a national conversation for the determination of an electoral system for Sierra Leone.
At that dialogue, the Chief Minister, David Sengeh said Sierra Leone was defining its political and legislative history by installing processes that would accommodate societal cohesion and foster national unity.
Weeks ago, a maiden inter-agency meeting was held at the Tripartite Secretariat to coordinate and track activities of electoral management bodies implementing various recommendations dealing with them.
These indicate a measurable speed at implementing the Unity Agreement and the Tripartite Recommendations, while informing the public at every progress made.
The Attorney-General also deals with the constitutional and legislative processes of the tripartite. The release of the inmates was part of the ongoing process of strengthening political dialogue and deepening national conversations that uphold the peace and cement the unity.
Ngolo Katta, Coordinator for the Tripartite Secretariat said he was impressed at the level of progress in the implementation of the Unity Agreement and the Tripartite Recommendations. This would continue to give assurance to the public that there ‘is a political stability, political cohesion, and national unity’ in Sierra Leone.
